Age of Mythology Returning Soon?

a new age for the beloved classic

A staple title in the genre of real-time strategy is Microsoft’s 2002 release of Age of Mythology. Stealing the hearts of many with a 9/10 rating by users on Steam, currently available for under 10 euros thanks to the summer sales, the classic is turning heads once more with news of a potential return. This notion is based on the following words from the Creative Director of its successor, Age of Empires, Adam Isgreen:

It’s great to see how much love there is for Age of Mythology, ’cause I love it too – it’s more of a… less accurate history. It’s super loose, people just have fun, and I love that too. After we get through the Definitive Editions for the three here, and 4 is kind of rolling. Then we’re going to look back and see what we can do with Myth. Because I love Myth, we’re not going to leave it behind, we’ll figure out what to do with it then.

He said the following to Eurogamer at E3 2019, full credit to them.
Age of Mythology: Extended Edition is available on Steam for less than 10 euros!

The Age of- series has been getting quite the polishing recently, as the developers at Microsoft Games are releasing Definitive Editions for practically all 4 of them by including all DLC packs and touching up through small nuances. While these definitive editions are being released within a couple of years, Age of Mythology is yet to undergo similar treatment. Having Age of Mythology: Extended Edition released in 2014, some might find it unlikely that the title will be remastered once more.

Personally, a sequel to the original is in the pipeline. After the aforementioned Definitive Editions are complete, I’m sure the team would be ready to produce something fresh rather than rinsing and repeating once more. A new, revamped and graphically updated Age of Mythology (2?) would certainly grab some attention should it ever be released in the future. Currently, the market of real-time strategy is in need of new titles, with a competitor such as Civilization also busy releasing expansions since their sixth title in 2016. Let us know in the comments if you’d also be interested in the return of Age of Mythology!
