ANOTHER STEP FORWARD FOR THE GENRE
If one could dial back the history of autobattlers beyond Teamfight Tactics and Dota Underlords, it’s established that the title which pioneered the new trend was, in fact, Auto Chess. While they offered sparks, they couldn’t keep up with the flame which Valve and Riot Games fueled; leaving Auto Chess in their dust, so to speak. Since then, the title has used the time under the radar to refine everything, now announcing that Auto Chess will be releasing on certain console as soon as next year!
Specifically, the Nintendo Switch and Playstation 4 will be receiving the title – Xbox One users may shed another tear. The versions will be exactly similar to the main PC and mobile ones, with new features on the horizon for all of Auto Chess too. While there is no official release date, Dragonest CEO Loring Lee expressed his earnest desire to have them released by 2020.
The move makes sense though – although they should obviously continue to pursue the PC and mobile market, consoles remain almost virgin to the genre of autobattlers; it could be the perfect opportunity to establish a player base on another platform. Using consoles, some features such as in-game voice chat, tournament features, and match replays will be available together with larger battle-modes. Most of these features will also make their way to the other platforms.
By bridging this gap, Drodo Studios are making their title more viable for cross-platform competition, trying to rival the likes of Riot’s Teamfigtht Tactics which undoubtedly sits at the top of the genre for the time being.
Will you be picking up Auto Chess on console? Personally, I think the Switch is the perfect device for it, while PS4 is almost just as viable, though less portable. Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
