Game of The Week (03/09/19)

Our faVOURITE HYDRATED SPONGE IS BACK

This year’s Gamescom was littered with exciting new reveals and showcases from a myriad of game developers. Personally, the fact that Spongebob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom is returning in a Rehydrated form is simply awesome. So much so, that I’ve considered it our Game of the Week for the opening week of September.

Although the bright colours of summer are slowly fading away, that doesn’t stop the upcoming title from offering itself up as a manifestation of creativity and colour characteristic of the iconic television series. Before proceeding, take a look at a bittersweet 12-minute gameplay below:

The comments section of the YouTube video says it all really. Many gamers type away their excitement for the title euphorically – offering thoughts of nostalgia and desperation to play the title once more. With THQ having published the title all the way back in 2003, they’ve brought back a community favourite through a graphical overhaul while staying true to the mechanics and features which make the game shine: Spongebob’s quirky walk, the unique dialogue and the soothing soundtrack are only a few examples. THQNordic has had previous experience when it comes to remastering, having worked on remastering Darksiders and The Raven; which were both relatively successful.

Initially revealed in June of this year, Gamescom was our first opportunity to check out some gameplay. We also have information that while new content such as a multiplayer mode will be gracing the classic, cut content includes the Robo-Squidward boss fight as an example. A release date is yet to be confirmed, though 2020 seems to be likely.

The remake of Battle for Bikini Bottom returns to us in a time where remasters are witnessing incredible success: as exemplified by the recent titles from Sony – Crash Bandicoot, Spyro and Ratchet and Clank as a few examples. The upcoming Spongebob title will not be exclusive for Playstation, also finding itself on Switch too. With expectations high and nostalgia strong, it’s up to the developers to deliver!

Let us know if you’re excited for the title in the comments section below!
