SOME OF THESE TITLES MIGHT SURPRISE YOU
Sometimes, there are days when not much is going on to write about – so I tend to search for anything interesting. One thing which was tickling my curiosity was the notion of highlighting the most-played video games of all time in terms of player count. The top end of the list is available below; while there may be games you’ve heard of, I can guarantee something’s new for you.
#5 – TETRIS
Starting off the list strong, it’s a cult classic title which has helped define gaming thanks to its intrinsic balance of simplicity and perplexing difficulty at times. With various publishers offering their own form across multiple platforms, the title is said to have had over 500 million players in terms of total player count. For those interested, the original Tetris title was released on the 6th of June in 1984 by a Russian programmer.
#4 – CANDY CRUSH SAGA
As a student, I take the bus often – where I witness a ridiculous amount of people entertaining themselves with a form of Candy Crush. Having become an iconic puzzle game for smartphones, the title has similar principles of assortment and puzzle as Tetris has. Currently sits at 500 million players also; just a little more than Tetris.
#3 – Pac-man doodle
When it comes to a list regarding the history of videogames, one would often be scandalized at the absence of Pac-Man. With the yellow missing pizza slice emerging as a videogame icon, the form of Pac-Man Doodle has attained over a peak of 505 million players in total.
#2 – DUNGEON FIGHTER ONLINE
I’ve actually never heard of this title – Dungeon Fighter Online is a classic side-scrolling beat ’em up title originating from South Korea. Having slowly claimed the entire Asian continent, DFO is one of the highest-grossing and most-played games of all time. At second place, it’s got a player count of 600 million as of 2019.
#1 – Crossfire
Again, we’re reminded that Asia is a hub for the gaming industry often hidden from the rest of the world. At 660 million registered accounts, the online first-person shooter is officially the most played game in the world by player count – it’s also coming to Xbox soon.
If you’ve noticed; all these titles are free-to-play, which is indicative, to say the least. While the article may be rather retro, titles such as PUBG, Fortnite, RuneScape, World of Warcraft and League of Legends barely missed out on the top 5.
